Some information about the Novosibirsk University and the conference

Our University is known as one of the leading Russian Universities which prepares students for their professional career in the field of fundamental research. During studies students have a possibility to use the unique research and technological equipment of the Research Institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The University has stable connections with other universities all over the world. The University has the Internet center. The UNESCO chair in sustainable development, environmental sciences and social problems was opened at the University recently. As the host of the conference the Novosibirsk State niversity has a number of advantages.

First, it has a unique geographical location in the middle of the Russian Federation.

Second, in preparation of the conference and during the meeting it enlists the cooperation of the huge scientific potential of the University and the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, thus encompassing nearly all branches of the fundamental science.

Third, attendees from different parts of the country are introduced to the prominent scientific schools both at the sessions and during special outings to the basic scientific research centers of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, thus encompassing nearly all branches of the fundamental science.

Annually the conference welcomes students and graduate students from more than 112 higher educational establishments of all republics of the former Soviet Union, young people from foreign countries studying in Russia and guests from Western Universities. More than 1000 reports are usually included in the conference program. It is noteworthy that the 1997 year meeting kept up with the previous ones: in spite of enormous financial difficulties the number of reports (1312) and the number of participants (900) did not drop. Our conference is unique in Russia with this respect.

Proceedings of the conference are published under the same name according to the sections of the conference. In 1997 we published 14 such collections of abstracts, and each of them was a book of about 100-130 A4 pages in volume. The participants who present the best talks are awarded diplomas and special prizes. It is planned to continue publications of the Proceeding in 1998.
