Biological and medical laboratories of NSU collaborate with the State Research Center of Virology and otechnology "Vector". Vector is one of the two WHO (World Health Organization) Collaborating Centers for Orthopoxvirus Diagnosis and Repository for Variola Virus Strains and DNA.

One of the discoverers of Denisovan is the Academician Anatoly Derevyanko, from the humanitarian Department of NSU. Extensive studies of the Denisova Cave in the Altai were actually initiated by NSU scholars and professors, as well as researchers of Akademgorodok institutes.

The Large Hadron Collider for NSU is not just a research of global importance in the remote CERN, but a project in which senior students, graduates and professors of the Department of Physics of NSU are actively collaborating. For example, the pentaquark was discovered in July 2015 with the assistance of NSU researchers. And by the way, one of the first in the world particle accelerators was created in Akademgorodok in the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the SB RAS.

Domestic foxes were bred in Akademgorodok at the Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the SB RAS: they are genetically tamed. Their behavior is close to that of a domestic dog, but they remain as independent as cats.


Graduates of the Department of Economics of Novosibirsk State University are among the highest paid professionals in Russia: NSU took the 7th place among Russian universities in terms of salaries of young professionals working in the area "Economics and Management".

Three alumni of NSU are on the Forbes list of the 200 Russia’s richest businessmen in 2015: Viktor Kharitonin (“Pharmstandard”) – 101 rank, Nikolai Skorokhodov (“Company Holiday”) - 178 rank, Yegor Kulkov (“Pharmstandard”) – 187 rank.

Among NSU alumni, there are one Academician of the Russian Academy of Education, 17 Academicians and 38 Corresponding Members of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

In 1994, Efim Isaakovich Zelmanov who graduated from the Department of Mechanics and Mathematics of NSU was awarded a Fields medal.

Legend goes that there would be an entire underground city in Akademgorodok: Research institutes and the University would be linked through underground tunnels built for defense purposes. Entrance is forbidden, but anyway not everyone is able to find it: only experienced and foolhardy diggers explore bunkers and occasionally share such stories.


More than a quarter of Akademgorodok surface is covered with pine forest and mixed pine-birch forest.

Akademgorodok is located on the banks of the Ob Sea. However you won’t find such name on the map: the sea is officially called Novosibirsk reservoir. It was created a bit more than 50 years ago during the construction of Novosibirsk hydroelectric power station. Its area is more than 1000 km2.

A bit of history: 360-370 million years ago on the site of Akademgorodok laid the bottom of the Paleo-asian Ocean, or more precisely one of its shallow seas. However, during the last glacial period, 12-15 thousand years ago, they were covered by eolian sediments which formed parallel dunes. This specific landscape is clearly visible in the Pirogov forest and is called “fox hill”. If you go for a jog or skiing through the local tracks, you will understand what it is about :))


You can practice more than 30 different sports in Akademgorodok, at different times of the year. In fact, besides NSU sport complex you can find at close distance fitness centers, ski resorts, sports groups, dance schools, sailing clubs, biking traces and last but not least, the Ob sea )))

10% of Akademgorodok population is composed of students.

65% of bachelor students get a scholarship for the first year of their studies. All the foreign students studying under the Russian Government Scholarship Program get a stipend (monthly living allowance).

NSU took the 5th place in ratings among Russian Universities in terms of alumni salaries in the IT sphere.
