Sports and leisure
According to seasonal preferences, the residents are cross-country skiers or
sailors, mashroom pickers and gardeners, gathers of wild grasses and herbs, and
fishermen. Skiing slopes are available within an hour's bus ride from
Akademgorodok in winter. There is also an all-year swimming pool and a
cross-country ski track of near professional quality. Inside Akademgorodok there
are several Stables offering coaching and horse-back riding to university
students. Cross-country tourism "in the saddle' is popular as well, with the
beautiful Altai region only a hundred miles away. Guided trips are arranged
there in the summer months, where a group of riders with tents and other
equipment enjoy the vistas of the Altai mountains, rivers and meadows during an
unhurried one-or two week crossing.
Every third student of the NSU is a member of a team or group and is training
in one of the 30 sport-clubs of the university. The most popular sports are
games, tennis, wrestling, box, aerobics and sports gymnastics.
There exists a special rural harmony with nature that makes Akademgorodok
such an attractive place to live and work. But monotony of rural life does not
threaten the residents. Akademgorodok is open to the whole world - and is
interesting to the world. It is sufficient to glance at the guest books of two
wonderful museums - the geological and the historical-ethnographic. Scholars,
politicians, public servants, journalists and of course artists, musicians and
writers all visit from all ends of the globe.
The city itself knows how to occupy and distract itself: The April 1st Satiric
Evening ("kapustniki", after the Russian word for cabbage), the May "Interweek"
celebration, Victory Day, New Year gala balls, Day of Science, and Church
holidays whose ringing bells signify a new relationship between government,
science and religion. there are all sorts of clubs where young people gather:
English, German, French, debate, chess, horticulture, crafts - all of these
based in the House of Scientists alone. Plus there are the "Academy" and "Youth"
clubs with their traditions and undertaking.
The night clubs have appeared as the sign of a rapidly changing time.
There is a quality bookshop, whose book stock closely follows undergraduate and
postgraduate programme requirements. It is also has an extensive range of books
for leisure reading.
Akademgorodok will always be wise, kind and warm home with windows on the
forest.
