Research
The major part of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences
(SB RAS) is the Novosibirsk Scientific Center (NSC) with about 37 scientific
research institutes and roughly 17.000 scholars, of whom 84 are the members of
the Russian Academy of Sciences, about 900 are doctors of sciences and 2,850
are candidates of sciences (PhD). This serious scientific potential has
preserved its capability for serious work. NSU takes full advantage of the rich
resources available to it as part of that industrial, scientific and social
infrastructure which is Akademgorodok.
Integration of education and research
Located in the center of Akademgorodok (literally “academic town”, a town of
science, research and youth) Novosibirsk State University is home to nearly
half the member institutions of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of
Sciences. An integral member of the SB RAS NSU is a brilliant example of
successful integration of education and research. A fundamental tenet of
education at NSU is instruction by active scholars. More than 6000 research
scientists at 48 research institutes of the SB RAS form an intellectual base of
the university. Included in this total are 100 members of the Russian Academy
of Sciences, 1200 doctors of science and 3800 candidates of science. The NSU
faculty totals 1735, including 459 professors with doctoral degrees (52 of whom
are members of the Russian Academy of Sciences) and 781 assistant professors
with candidate degrees.
