The Department of Journalism was established in 2000 on the basis of the subdivisionof journalism in the Department of Humanities. The Department trains specialists in journalism.
The training process is based on the traditions of classical liberal education and a wide range of disciplines that form the skills required to work in both printed and electronic media, publishing business, advertising and PR agencies.
General humanitarian education of future journalists comprises courses in economics, sociology, psychology, history of Russia, Europe and the USA, international relations, foreign language (English, German, French). The basic courses of general professional training are history of Russian and foreign literature, world and Russian journalism, linguistics. During their study at the Department students both learn the basics of journalism, and get acquainted with the processes in today’s media market. All this aspects are studied in courses “Fundamentals of creative work of a journalist”, “Journalistic skills”, “Journalist’s ethics”, “Sociology of Mass Media”, “Journalism psychology”, “Economics of Mass Media” etc. The Center of Practical Journalism has been working at the Department since 2002. The center hosts courses in radio journalism, TV journalism, as well as special courses in photography, modern foreign film art, cinematography. Students learn to work with software and technologies currently used in many modern professional TV and radio stations.
In the 3rd year students choose the field of journalism - cultural, political, scientific, business - for further in-depth studying. Also, after two years of study students define the field of their professional specialization: TV journalism, radio journalism or printed press.
