The Department of Natural Science was the first and the only department of NSU founded in 1959. A great contribution to its development was made by outstanding scientists, founders of chemical and biological scientific schools, members of The USSR Academy of Sciences V.V. Voevodskiy, D.G. Knorre, N.N. Vorozhtsov, A.V. Nikolaev, G.K. Boreskov, V.A. Koptyug, D.K. Belyaev, K.I. Zamaraev and others. Nowadays, their numerous followers continue working at the Department.
The Department of Natural Science consists of two subdivisions that provide training in the following fields:
Students of both subdivisions get fundamental knowledge in their major fields as well as in physics and mathematics. During their first three years, students are required to complete a considerable number of practical courses equipped with latest high-precision and computer-based facilities. The Department has its own camps for summer biological and ecological internships in the Altai Mountains, forest-steppe zone of the Novosibirsk Region, at the Ob Sea. During their last two years, students of both chemical and biological subdivisions choose their specialization and get in-depth knowledge in more particular fields doing their graduate work at one of the institutes of The Siberian Branch of The Russian Academy of Sciences or The Siberian Branch of The Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. Graduates of the Department are in great demand both in Russia and abroad.
