The Department of Geology and Geophysics was established in 1962 at the base of the Chair of General and Regional Geology.
The Department provides training within the programs of higher education in Geology: Bachelor’s Degree (4 years) and Master’s Degree (6 years of study).
The training is performed at the base of the following research institutes of the Siberian Branch of The Russian Academy of Sciences: Institute of Geology and Mineralogy, Institute of Petroleum Geology and Geophysic , Institute of Computing Mathematics and Mathematical Geophysics, Institute of Mining and Siberian Research Institute of Geology, Geophysics and Minerals. Starting from the 3d year students conduct their research at research institutes as well as choose their specialization at the chairs of the Department. One way to assess the scientific level of students’ works is their participation in annual International Scientific Student Conferences “Student and Scientific and Technological Progress”.
The chair of Geology organizes summer field internships for all students of the Department: in Gorny Altai, at Shira training ground in Khakassia. The high qualification of geologists is assured by applying aerospace Earth images, petrological and isotopic data, as well as the means of computer processing of video information including geo mapping data, at the base of Education and Research Center of GIS-technologies.
University training enables graduates to work successfully in academic and industrial geological organizations in Russia and abroad.
For over 45 years the Department has graduated more than 2100 specialists. 25% of them have become Doctors and Candidates of Science.
At present, there are 3 members and 6 corresponding members of The Russian Academy of Sciences, 40 Doctors and 55 Candidates of Science teaching at the Department.
Since 2012 corresponding member of The Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Geology and Mineralogy Professor Valery Arnoldovich Vernikovskiy has headed the Department.
