The department of doctoral studies at NSU has existed since 1988. It provides training in Physics and Mathematics as well as in topical issues of history and philosophy.

The doctoral program in the development of new mathematical models for research in physics and education was open in 1994. The doctoral program in specialization 10.02.01 – “The Russian language” has enrolled students since 1998. Department of Doctoral studies at Novosibirsk State University is being the base for training highly qualified scientific and pedagogical staff for institutions of higher education in Siberia and the Far East.

Each doctoral student is provided with an academic advisor from amongst the leading scientists in their major area. Students continue studying the next academic year according to the results of their chair report which is then approved by Academic Board of the Department.

Russian citizens - Candidates of Science with scientific achievements in their field and ability to conduct high-level fundamental and applied research in physics, mathematics, history, philosophy and philology - can enter the doctorate.

The doctoral training lasts 3 years. Rules of admission and training are defined by Federal Law on Higher and Postgraduate Professional Education
