According to the Russian legislation, foreign citizens shall take out Medical Insurance before or after the entry into the Russian Federation. The sum covered by the medical insurance should be at least $5,000 USD and cover the cost of outpatient treatment, inpatient treatment and repatriation.
If you did not purchase Medical Insurance before your arrival, please do it after you arrive at NSU. You need to take out a Medical Insurance Policy at the NSU International Office (room 233a, in the corridor between University main building and laboratories building).
The medical insurance policy covers
- inpatient and outpatient treatment for acute diseases,
- exacerbation of chronic diseases,
- other cases (depending on the medical insurance plan).
It includes also specialist consultations, tests, examinations, medical certificates, and prescriptions.
Addresses and telephone numbers of the hospitals where you can receive medical care will be provided in your medical insurance policy.
Other health services
If your medical insurance plan does not cover health care services you need, you can always go to other medical institutions. In Akademgorodok there are public and private hospitals, clinics and medical centers. You can always ask for information about them at the NSU International Office.

In the Siberian region in spring and early summer when it’s getting warm small insects called ticks become more active. By the bite of an infected insect a dangerous virus which causes a serious disease called tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) can be transmitted to people.
The best way to prevent TBE is to be vaccinated against it before you travel to Novosibirsk, particularly if you are planning to go hiking or camping in the forests. Even if you have been vaccinated, you should still take precautions to reduce your risk of being bitten by an infected tick. Keep from walking on the grass. It is strongly recommended that every time after a walk you should check your clothes and body for ticks. The common places to find them are the hair line, behind the ears, the elbows, backs of the knees, the groin and the armpits. If you are planning to go camping, wear longsleeved tops and tuck trousers into your socks. Apply a tick repellent to exposed skin.
If you are bitten by a tick, you urgently need professional medical help. Do not try to remove the tick yourself! It should be done by a doctor who will test if the tick is infected. If necessary, the doctor will give you an injection of immunoglobulin.
We recommend you should buy special insurance for a tick bite (300 rubles), with which the injection is free. One shot without this insurance will cost you 5,000- 10,000 rubles (depending on your weight).
