The article deals with linguistic evidence of interaction between Pagan and Christian cosmological motifs in the conversion period. Having compared language tools verbalizing the Christian idea of ‘Gehenna’ in the Gothic Bible and the Pagan idea of ‘World Chasm’ and ‘Chaos’ in the Eddas respectively, the author concludes that the established formal and conceptual affinity of Go. gaiainna* and ON Ginnungagap could have led to their hybridization in the minds of Gothic speakers and ultimately triggered changes of the borrowed word form aligning it with inherited “chaotic” vocabulary: Go. *geinan *gainon ‘to yawn’. As a result of this folk-etymological re-interpretation a new word (hypothetically Go. *gaina f. -ō- or the like) could have emerged in spoken Gothic with its semantics integrating essential features of both Pagan and Christian concepts.
