Many conflicts that happen in a diverse health care setting are predicated on cultural and linguistic misunderstanding. Most of these cultural clashes are related to universal situations, such as verbal and nonverbal misconceptions, conventions for courtesy, ethnocentrism, discrimination, and so forth. This article discusses special concerns of several cultural groups who come from different cultural backgrounds and often speak different languages: white Americans, African Americans, Latino Americans and Eastern Europeans (Russians, Ukrainians and Byelorussians) in the context of the U.S. health care system. The author provides examples of their diverse ethnic health beliefs and traditions, verbal and nonverbal communication challenges, different cultural experiences, etc. The specifics of national and sociocultural phenomena affecting health are evaluated by the six factors that vary among cultural groups: environmental control, biological variations, social organization, communication, space and time orientation. The article shows how important it is to recognize and take into consideration linguistic and cultural differences in the perception of health, illness, and healthcare.
